He was diagnosed with cancer, September 1998. At this time he had cancer of the liver, lungs, and brain.

He was married to Mary Ellen Davis (daughter of William Chesley Davis and Anna Belle Ayers) on 23 Nov 1942 in Huntsville, AL. He was married to Mary Ellen Davis on 23 Nov 1942 in Huntsville, Tn. ⁽²⁾ Mary Ellen Davis ⁽¹⁾ was born on 10 Oct 1925 in Cookville, Tn.⁽²⁾ She died on 10 Aug 1991 in Vanderbuilt Hospital, Nashville, Tn, Davidson County. She died on 10 Aug 1991 in Vanderbuilt, Nashville, Tn.⁽²⁾ She was buried on 13 Aug 1991 in Mt. Olivet, Nashville, Tn.⁽²⁾ John Daniel Covington Sr. and Mary Ellen Davis had the following children:
