SECOND GENERATION

8. Josie COVINGTON (1) was born on 22 Mar 1890 in Rocky Fork, Rutherford County, TN. She died on 18 Mar 1984 in Nolensville, Williamson County, TN. She Buried in Nolensville Cemetery, Nolensville, Williamson County, TN. As a little girl when the family lived on Del Thomas Road, just off of Rocky Fork Road at what is called the homeplace, Josie was the one chosen to feed Pappy's sorghum mill. When Josie was 6 years old her mother died. When she was about 14years old she moved to West Nashville to live with her brother. Jim and his wife, Ella (Elnora Frances Snell). At this time Jim was delivering ice of the ice house down town near the Cumberland River. It was while she was there that she welcomed the birth of Ella and Jim's first child, Mattie Louise Covington on August 10, 1906. It was also when she was living with them that she was baptized into Christ at Charlotte Avenue Church of Christ. It was a short time after this that she met and married Minos Vice Cherry on 29 December 1907. In the meantime Pappy in about 1897 married Mary Elizabeth Smith and on 21 December 1899 their first child, Dewey Covington, was born and four years later they had Flora Beatrice Covington on 30 of June 1903. So when Josie was 6 years old, her mother died, the year being 31 December 1893; her brother, Charley was barely 1 and 1/2 years old, sister Louzina was five and brother John Henry was 8 years old, brother Jim was 12, sister Cora was 14, sister Mary Sue (Susie) was 17, and brother Willie was 18 years old. So, Mary Elizabeth inherited eight children from 18 down to 1 and 1/2 years. And one year later she had the 9th child of Henry Allen and then in 1903 she had Flora. No one is really sure, but when Cora got married some of the children lived with her. Charley did for sure and later on he lived with Jim and Ella, Louise, Emery, Clifford, and Howard when they lived at the DeBow Farm in Donelson. He made this move when he was about 16 sometime around 1918-19. In late 1904 or early 1905 Pappy lost his second wife Mary Elizabeth. Flora was hardly a year old and Dewey was barely 5 years old. So Josie grew up with three sets of children for by the 15 January 1906 Pappy's last child was born, a girl called Annie, born to Pappy's third and last wife, Lillie Irwin Hackett. Lillie brought into this family a boy of her own called Scooby. So, in Pappy's death notice of 15 February 1930, he was the father of 13 children--12 he sired and 1 stepson.

In the 1910 Tennessee State Census, Pappy Henry Allen still lived in the homeplace off Rocky Fork Road. Pappy was 53 years old. Lillie was 41 years old. Charley was 17 years old. Marcus (Scooby) was 13. Dewey was 10 and Annie was 1 year old. Flora was not in the 1910 Census. In the 1920 Census Pappy was 64 years old; Lillie 50 years old; Dewey was 20 years old; Flora was 16 and Annie was a teenager at 14 year old. Since Pappy died in early 1930 he didn't make that Census.
