Dear Bill,
I am almost certain that Thomas G. Covington is the son of David Covington.
Thomas left Smyrna for Trigg Co. Ky as a young man. Trigg at one time was part
of Christian Co. Ky. My grandfather who died at the age of 97 in 1975 enjoyed
visiting the capital in Nashville, for he recalled his father telling him how
he watched the columns dragged up the hill and put in place when he was a young
boy. My aunt who lives in Nashville even took my grandfather to visit Smyrna,
but am not sure which Covingtons were visited.
My grandfather was also extremely familiar with Civil War history of that area.
When my aunt and I took him one summer to Franklin, TN, the site of a Civil
War battle, he knew all about Jefferson Davis and the man from Smyrna who was
executed as a spy.
My cousin, Frances Covington, a retired school teacher, who died at the age of
101 in 1995, told me that when Thomas G. Covington was moving his family from
Trigg Co. to Graves Co., a baby died on the way and the family buried him at
Smithland, KY.
The 1860 census of Trigg Co. taken on 26 Sept. 1860 lists a T.G. Covington, age
33, as a carpenter with value of land and personal property at $150. The census
also says he was born in TN. An M.C. Covington (Matilda Caroline) was listed
as age 23. She was also born in TN, according to census data. In 1861, the
family moved to Graves Co. and is listed on the 1870 census.
There are lots of Covingtons buried at Robbins Cemetery in Graves Co. I will
try to find out if anyone has conducted a genealogical study of this cemetery.
I know that all the Covingtons were active in the Baptist Church. When I lived
in Louisville, I visited the Baptist Seminary's historical section of library.
However, the paper was old and crumbly that sheets could not be photocopied.
The seminary even had minutes of Baptist meetings in Graves Co. when a church
in Graves was being organized.
Will send you dates of marriages and other documentation as soon as possible.
